Exchanging Mind Maps between SimpleMind Touch and Desktop

Exchange video

Video showing how to exchange MindMaps between iPad and SimpleMind Desktop

SimpleMind Desktop supports exchanging Mind Maps with SimpleMind Touch for the iPhone/iPod. Note: communication requires a WiFi connection - communication via 3G is not supported. On the desktop, you can view and edit Mind Maps created on the iPhone and vice versa. The exchanging process is controlled from within the iPhone: the Mind Map editor has a "Save to Desktop" command. The Mind Map list has a "Open from desktop" command.

For both commands the desktop application must be running. The first time you connect to the desktop, on the desktop you must grant access by entering an access code.

Save to Desktop

To Save a Mind Map from the Touch version to the Desktop version, in the Mind Map editor, use the action sheet and select "Save to Desktop". If you had saved this Mind Map before - or created it on the desktop earlier, the desktop replaces the existing version with the one from the iPhone.

Open from Desktop

To Open a Mind Map from the desktop on the iPhone, in the Mind Map list, use the action sheet and select "Open from Desktop". From the list with Mind Map available on the desktop, click the one you wish to open. If you had opened this Mind Map before (or created it on the iPhone), the existing version is replaced with the one from the desktop.

Note: Opening Mind Maps from SimpleMind Free (desktop Mac) on SimpleMind Touch is not supported

Connection Problems?

Connection problems usually are caused by:

  • A firewall on the desktop (99% of the cases).
On Windows, make sure you allow iPhoneLink.exe to access the LAN. On Windows 7 the firewall for the local network should be adjusted.
On Mac, make sure you allow SimpleMind (Trial).app to access the LAN.
  • SimpleMind for iPhone can only connect through the Wifi / LAN, not through the mobile 3G net
  • Bluetooth on the iPhone/iPad can interfere with the WiFi coonection. Disable bluetooth (keyboard!) and retry
  • The device WiFi connection is plain unreliable in some cases (router dependent?) Restarting both desktop and device several times often helps.
  • SimpleMind running on iPhone iOS 4.0 or iPad iOS 3.2 can experience connection problems with SimpleMind desktop due to problems with Apple's Bonjour. The connection is unreliable and is more or less frequently unavailable. This results in errors like: "Desktop not found". Upgrading to the latest iOS version available solves this problem.
