Getting started

How to get started

A Mind Map is a visual representation of hierarchical information that includes a central idea surrounded by connected branches of associated topics. It's a great way to organize your thoughts and to share your thoughts with others. A Mind Map starts with a central theme to which you can add topics (bubbles, balloons). You can add child topics to each topic. A topic and all of its child topics are called a branch.

When first starting SimpleMind a new Mind Map is created automatically. Enter any text as your Central Theme. To add more Topics, use the -tool and drag it anywhere you want. To add a Cross Link, drag the -tool to an existing topic. To learn more, check out the Editor Help.

Where can I purchase SimpleMind desktop for Windows?

SimpleMind desktop for Windows can be purchased from our web site optionally in a bundle with SimpleMind desktop for Mac.

SimpleMind for Android can be only be purchased via Google Play store or SamsungApps.
SimpleMind for iPad and iPhone can only be purchased from Apple's iTunes, either as app or InApp purchase inside SimpleMind+.

Is SimpleMind desktop available in my language?

SimpleMind desktop is only available in US English. There are no language packs available and there's no other way to make it work in other languages.

What Windows versions are supported?

SimpleMind for Windows is created for and tested on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 desktop. Windows RT is not supported. We do not test on other Windows versions such as WinXP and WinServer. To find out if SimpleMind for Windows runs on your computer, install the Trial. Except for the 30-day time limitation the trial is identical to the full edition, therefore: if the trial runs OK, the full edition will run OK too.

Where can I download the latest version of SimpleMind for desktop?

SimpleMind has a built-in update checker that automatically checks for updates. Alternatively, you can download the latest version via the download web-page mentioned in the delivery email. That web-page offers the latest version available.
Do not download the Trial, it cannot be activated into a full version.

Installation problems

After you have purchased the full edition, you receive a delivery email with download and activation details.
Use that email to download the full edition and install it. After installing, start SimpleMind and activate it using the activation data from the same email.
You can verify you are running the full edition with: Main Menu ➜ SimpleMind ➜ About. The About dialog shows either your licensed name and key for the full edition, or "trial" for the trial.

If you get an error message stating that the downloaded setup file is corrupt, this is either because the download was incomplete, or a virus scanner has blocked the download. You need to temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download the setup.

If you, after installing the full edition, start SimpleMind and still get the Trial version or still see the "30-day Trial has expired" message, this means the trial version was not replaced with the full edition. Again, this is usually caused by a virus scanner or something similar that blocked replacing the trial edition. To work around this, first uninstall the trial, temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download and re-install the full edition from the activation e-mail.
Note: uninstalling the trial will not delete your existing Mind Maps.

Recently some virus scanners report the trial contains a virus or a trojan. This is a false positive and you can install safely.
Should this happen, please send us a screenshot of the notification and a screenshot of what virus definitions you use. We will contact your virus scanner provider to update their virus definitions.
If the download is blocked, you need to temporarily disable the virus scanner and re-download SimpleMind.

Mind Map files, Clouds and back-up

Where are my Mind Maps stored?

SimpleMind stores Mind Maps in different independent storages:

  • One Local private directory on your computer.
  • Optionally multiple External Directories that can be synchronized with Clouds, such as the Dropbox directory or Google Drive directory.

In the Mind Map Explorer panel on the left you'll have a Tab for each storage (Local, Dropbox, Google Drive etc.).

Local Mind Maps

Local Mind Maps are stored in a special Mind Map Store directory. You should consider the files in this directory read-only and never modify any file in this directory yourself or via any other app than SimpleMind. Doing so may lead to data corruption or loss of mind maps. Typically this is directory: "C:\Users\[USER NAME]\AppData\Roaming\ModelMakerTools\SimpleMind\1.0". File names are automatically assigned and cannot / should not be changed.
To change or view the Local Mind Map Store directory, select SimpleMind - About - Maintenance. Never change the Local storage directory to a cloud directory like the Dropbox directory.

To back up your Mind Maps, back up the entire contents of this directory.
Also, you can use "Export Store" to create a single archive containing all relevant Local files. This can be used to create a backup or to transfer the mind maps to another computer, using Import in the same Maintenance dialog.

Clouds and External Directories

External Directories are how SimpleMind supports saving Mind Maps in clouds like Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Unlike the Local Mind Map Store, External Directories are intended for sharing and synchronizing Mind Maps across devices.
Although SimpleMind for Windows allows saving on multiple clouds, all other SimpleMind editions (iPhone/iPad, Android, Mac) currently only support Dropbox and Google Drive. Therefore, use Dropbox or Google Drive if you want to sync your Mind Maps with iPads, iPhones, Android devices or Macs.

To connect SimpleMind to a cloud, follow these steps. Where the text mentions Dropbox, you can read Google Drive, One Drive or your favorite cloud application.

  • If you had not done that yet: first download and install the Dropbox application. Installing the Dropbox app creates the Dropbox directory on your computer. The Dropbox app will synchronize the files on this directory with the Dropbox server.
  • In SimpleMind select the Cloud Tab in the Mind Map Explorer Panel (left pane, see image).
  • Use "Add Cloud" and select the Dropbox directory and Dropbox icon.

After clicking OK, a new Dropbox Tab will be added to the Mind Map Explorer pane. Use this Dropbox Explorer to browse the Dropbox directory structure and directly open Mind Maps from Dropbox.

SimpleMind opens and saves Mind Maps in the selected Dropbox directory but relies on the Dropbox app for actual synchronization with the Dropbox server.

See how syncing Mind Maps across devices works in the video below. This shows the sync via Dropbox, you can also use Google Drive.

Sharing/Exporting

How to share/export a Mind Map

Exporting your Mind Map, or sharing via e-mail, is possible in several formats including .pdf, .png image, .html outline (and more).
To export, use Main Menu ➜ Mind Map ➜ Export Mind Map.
To send a Mind Map by mail, use Main Menu ➜ Mind Map ➜ Email Mind Map.
Note: In some cases SimpleMind cannot access your mail program. You will have to manually export your Mind Map and use your mail program to attach the exported file to your e-mail.

How to create an Outline/export a Mind Map to a word processor or spreadsheet

To create an outline document, export your Mind Map as .html outline. The .html outline maintains the hierarchical structure in the Mind Map. It can be imported in word processors and in some spreadsheets. This will result in a hierarchical list with topic texts. Each topic has a sub-list containing its sub-topic texts. Use the Bullets and Numbering options in the word processor to number these lists to your liking.

How do I exchange Mind Maps with another device running SimpleMind?

You have the following options to exchange Mind Maps with another device running SimpleMind:

  1. Use Dropbox or Google Drive to automatically synchronize Mind Maps.
Connect SimpleMind for Windows to Dropbox or Google Drive.
Set up clouds on SimpleMind for Mac.
Set up clouds on SimpleMind for Android.
Set up clouds on SimpleMind for iPad and iPhone.
  2. Share your Mind Map via Mail.

What Mind Map formats can be imported?

SimpleMind can import FreeMind (.mm) and .opml files.
To import a file from a different Mind Map application (XMind etc.), please check if that program supports converting to Freemind (.mm) or .opml.

Locate the file on your computer and select open with - SimpleMind
Or, if stored on the cloud, find the document in SimpleMind's cloud explorer. Right click and click import.

Import PDF as links / link to PDF - SimpleMind Desktop

With SimpleMind you can import the bookmarks of the table of contents of a PDF as a new Mind Map with links. Each bookmark will be a new topic with a link back to the PDF.
Please note: This requires an official Table of Contents in the PDF.

As a local Mind Map

  • Open (any) local Mind Map.
  • Via the Menu select "Mind Map" - "Add Mind Map" - "New Mind Map from PDF"
  • Select the PDF on your computer.

As a Mind Map in the cloud

  • Open (any) Mind Map in the cloud's explorer.
  • Via the Menu select "Mind Map" - "Add Mind Map" - "New Mind Map from PDF"
  • Select the PDF in the cloud folder.

Importing Freemind files

SimpleMind for Desktop can import Freemind files (.mm). However, Freemind support is quite limited and only intended for a one-time import to convert the Freemind Mind Map to the native SimpleMind format. SimpleMind will extract text, notes and hierarchy from the Freemind file. All other attributes such as links and icons are ignored. Any rich text is flattened to plain text. Freemind does not save spatial information and SimpleMind uses its own lay outer to position topics. Once imported, the Mind Map is stored in the native .smmx format.
To import, select the file on your computer, right click - "Open with" and select SimpleMind.

Miscellaneous

How to get rid of the Trash image displayed in the Mind Map editor?

If you delete a Mind Map it is moved to the Trash folder, rather than actually deleting it. Similar to how the mail app treats deleting email messages. To draw your attention to the fact that the Mind Map is actually deleted, a trash images is displayed in the editor background. To get rid of the trash background image, undelete the Mind Map by moving it to any other folder. The same applies to Mind Maps created in the Trash folder. Use Empty Trash to completely irreversibly delete the Mind Map.

How do I install additional dictionaries for the spelling checker?

SimpleMind desktop for Windows uses the Addictive Software spelling checker. This allows installing additional dictionaries. To do so:

  • Download a dictionary from the Addictive Software web-site.
  • Use Windows Explorer to locate the SimpleMind installation directory. This would typically be something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\ModelMakerTools\SimpleMind\1.9.5" depending on your system and SimpleMind version. You'll see SimpleMindPro.exe in this directory
  • Open the downloaded .zip file and extract the .adm file to the SimpleMind install directory.
  • Restart SimpleMind. Your new dictionary will now be available. Use the spelling options (available when right clicking on a misspelled word) to include or exclude dictionaries.

How can I import Custom Styles from the desktop to my iPad/iPhone or Android device?

If your Mind Map uses a Custom Style, that style will automatically become available on other devices running SimpleMind if you use Dropbox or Google Drive to synchronize.

Can I keep working with the Mind Maps I made in the Trial version?

SimpleMind full version shares the mind maps and settings with the Trial version. After installing the full edition you continue working where you left in the Trial version.
Note: Uninstalling SimpleMind Trail will not remove your Mind Maps.
